The Carpet Layer’s Mistake
A carpet layer had just finished installing carpet for a lady. He stepped out for a smoke, only to realise he’d lost his cigarettes.
In the middle of the room, under the carpet, was a bump.
‘’No sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack of smokes,’’ he said to himself. He proceeded to get out his hammer and flattened the hump.
As he was cleaning up, the lady came in. ‘’Here,’’ she said, handling him his pack of cigarettes. ‘’I found them in the hallway.’’
‘’Now,’’ she said, ‘’if only I could find my parakeet.’’
A matter of books
l“Alice in Wonderland” used to be banned in parts of China. In 1931 General Ho Chien said, “Bears, lions and other beasts cannot use a human language. To attribute to them such a power is an insult to the human race.”
l Other than “Nancy Drew”, Diana Dare, Stella Strong, Helen Hale and Nan Nelson were names that were also considered for the character.
l Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s former chief exorcist, believes practicing yoga is Satanic. He said, “It leads to evil, just like reading Harry Potter.”
l Before jumping to books and TV and Happy Meals, Strawberry Shortcake and the Care Bears were just designs on greeting cards.
l To get detainees to talk, one of the songs interrogators at Guantanamo Bay use most is Barney’s “I Love You”.
l Dr. Seuss said he expected to spend more than a week or so when writing “The Cat in the Hat”. It ended up taking a year and a half.
l Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham” only used 50 words. This fact won Dr. Seuss a $50 bet with his publisher who said that he could not do it. Additionally, 49 of the 50 words used in Green Eggs are one-syllable words.[image]
l The title of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” was changed to “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” because it was suggested that children would not be drawn to read something with the word ‘philosopher’ in the title, and that the meaning of ‘philosopher’ is slightly different in Britain and America.
l The author of “Gulliver’s Travels”, Jonathan Swift, wrote about two moons circling Mars in the book. He described their exact size and speed of orbit one hundred years before they were discovered by astronomers.
l The author of “Goodnight Moon”, Margeret Wise Brown, had no children. She left all the money from the book as well as future earning to a young neighbour boy.
l R.L. Stine, the author of “Goosebumps”, was also a head writer on Eureeka’s Castle. This was a Nickelodeon show which featured lovable puppets.
