We might not spend as much time thinking about Saroj Khan as we do with Katrina Kaif, or Kareena Kapoor, and sometimes Veena Malik - actually, who are we kidding, we spend all our time thinking about Veena Malik - Saroj is the woman behind most dance sequences that have made these women huge. Thankfully, Saroj Khan is not behind the 'Chikni Chameli' choreography which makes us love her even more.
She has to her credit incredible classics such as 'Hawa Hawai', 'Tu Cheez Bari Hai Mast Mast', 'Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein', Nagina, that film in which Sridevi is a nagin and Amrish Puri a sapera, (the unforgettable number ‘Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera’) never has there been such an incredible pairing of people. Then Saroj also has to her credit newer movies such as Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal.
To sum it up, Saroj Khan has worked with everyone, and she has been great at it. Her greatest regret? There has been no one to rival Madhuri as far as dancing goes again.
"My search is still on for the new-age Madhuri Dixit,” says Saroj. “So far there is no one who can rival her."
"I am not just just looking for a good dancer but also a woman who can emote. When she dances, others should also feel like dancing, if she cries others should feel like crying. And to make that model, I need the kind of clay which Madhuri is made of."
The other thing that saddens Saroj Khan is that the quality of dance in Bollywood has fallen, and for this she blames people trying to get by with the least amount of work, as everyone is so busy.
"Basically we never did injustice to the dance, that is the reason people still remember me and appreciate my work. If we didn't like something, we would say it, be it Salman or Kareena. But kaam chalau pe vishwas nahi karte," she says.
"Because of the hectic schedules nobody wants to come for rehearsals. I think apart from Madhuri and Aishwarya, hardly anyone comes for rehearsals, which would eventually reflect on the quality on screen." |
