Aisam ul Haq was raised in a sporting family where his mother, Nosheen Ihtsham, was a former Pakistan No. 1 tennis player. Educated at Punjab University Lahore, he helps support a family-run charity 'Haq Foundation'. He is a former World No. 7 junior player (July 1998). His goal in tennis is, "to make it a popular sport in Pakistan, to win a Grand Slam and to win a gold medal for Pakistan at the Asian Games".

He has won the most Davis Cup matches for Pakistan, being the most successful singles and doubles player ever. He is also half of the most successful doubles pairing for Pakistan (with Aqeel Khan) in the country's sporting history.

Aisam and his partner Rohan Bopanna have created a campaign, Stop War Start Tennis, with their goal to play a match on the border joining India and Pakistan.
