Cheap energy

Friday, Dec 01, 2023

The price of electricity has more than tripled amidst the recent wave of high inflation. A rise in the price of electricity automatically increases the prices of many services and goods. Expensive power is also a deterrent to the growth of industry, which provides jobs and leads to exports. Unfortunately most of the power generation in Pakistan is done with expensive imported oil. This is despite the fact that Pakistan has the potential to generate much cheaper hydroelectricity. Cheap power can help build industry, attract foreign investment, create jobs, and give financial relief to the people. A cleaner environment will be an added advantage. The government should prioritize the building of dams for hydroelectricity generation and should also invest in other sources of renewable energy such as wind and solar.
