A family returning home from a wedding in the early hours of Wednesday faced a tragedy when their motorbike was rammed into by a speeding trailer truck in Korangi. While the two-wheeler’s driver and two of his children survived the accident, his wife and teenage daughter were killed.

Police and rescue workers arrived on the scene, and took the casualties to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. The woman, 41-year-old Nadia, wife of Niaz, and her daughter, 15-year-old Shumaila, had suffered serious injuries to their faces and heads, and died on the spot.

Following the accident, locals gathered on the site and hurled stones at the trailer, breaking its windows, then poured petrol on the vehicle and set it on fire.

The fire was later extinguished, then the police impounded the truck. The trailer driver attempted to flee but the locals caught him and beat him up before handing him over to the police.

Niaz, the man who lost his wife and daughter, later told the media at the hospital that the truck had sideswiped them, causing their motorbike to fall over. He said that approaching from behind them, the trailer then collided with their two-wheeler.

He said he, his wife and their three children were riding the motorbike at the time of the incident, adding that two of his children had survived. The daughter who was killed was in the eighth grade at school.
