Israel’s attack on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus last week has precipitously escalated the ever-widening Gaza conflict. The targeting of a diplomatic facility is a flagrant violation of all norms of international law. In its disproportionate violence against the Palestinians of Gaza, Israel has already massacred more than 33000 people.
Iran’s allies have, of course, decried this criminal attack. Most of the international community seems frustrated because their pleas for a ceasefire seem to be falling on deaf ears. The United Nations must take a more assertive stance in holding Israel accountable.
