In Pakistan, in several cases, educational institutions that are meant to be sanctuaries for learning, growth, and equal opportunities, have become unsafe for women. Incidents of sexual harassment appear to be on the rise on campuses across the country. Around a week or so back, a friend of mine was harassed by a rickshaw driver just outside the campus of our university. She promptly got off the rickshaw and hurriedly ran towards the university gate.
Fortunately, she was able to reach the security personnel stationed at the gate and later she went home safely. She was horrified by this incident which affected her mental health.
Sexual harassment can have wide-ranging and long-lasting consequences for individuals, their parents, and the university community. Legislators, university administrators, parents, and religious leaders must take proactive steps to prevent sexual harassment and to provide support and resources for students who have experienced harassment or assault. Addressing this issue can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all students
