This letter refers to the editorial ‘Abuse with impunity’ (April 13, 2024) on minority rights abuses in Pakistan. The piece is very timely and accurate. Our religious minorities are indeed trapped in a very sad situation and extra efforts by the government to counter oppression and mistreatment of minority individuals and communities are desperately needed.
I would suggest that a federal oversight committee or special commission on minority rights headed by the PM should be instituted for the purposes of monitoring nationwide conditions and coordinating efforts between provinces and human rights organizations. These efforts should also be mirrored at the provincial level. Until and unless such steps are taken and minorities will continue to be unsafe in Pakistan.
