SUKKUR: As many as 20 peacocks have died of fatal Ranikhet disease over the past three days in different villages of Chhachro taluka in Tharparkar district.
The villages, which reported the deaths of 20 peacocks, include Samo Rind, Karimdad Jo Tarr and Kaisrar in Chhachro taluka of Tharparkar.
The Sindh Wildlife Department said that the peacocks died of viral Ranikhet disease, adding that they were trying to vaccinate the peacocks in the area.
As summer approaches and temperatures rise in the desert district Tharparkar, the region’s indigenous birds, including peacocks and their offspring begin to die due to the outbreak of fatal viral diseases.
Mohammad Sajan Charo, an activist from Dadsar village, said more than 20 birds died in his area in the last two days.
Charo further said that more than 100 peacocks had fallen sick due to the viral disease in various villages of Tharparkar district.
Tharparkar District Game Officer said the teams from the wildlife department had been dispatched to the different villages to investigate the complaints.
