Peshawar uplift programme set to restore historic markets

PESHAWAR: As part of the Peshawar Uplift Programme, historic markets such as Chowk Yadgar, Meena Bazaar, Misgaran Bazaar, Peepal Mandi, and others in the heart of the city are slated for restoration, aiming to revive their ancient allure and bolster tourism.

The decision was made on a request by Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Asif Khan from NA 32, who approached Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud to spearhead the project. The MNA stressed the significance of preserving Peshawar’s rich cultural heritage and fostering tourism, and urged action.

Commissioner Riaz Khan Mehsud promptly directed the director general of Peshawar Development Authority to commence repair work on City Circular Road, GT Road, Dilzak Road, and Ring Road, alongside the installation of sodium streetlights. Furthermore, the Project Engineer of the Peshawar Uplift Programme has been tasked with surveying the markets and drafting a report on their renovation to restore their historical essence.

The project’s goal is to undertake extensive development endeavours in Peshawar under the uplift programme, showcasing the city’s splendor to visitors and celebrating its rich cultural legacy. Commissioner Riaz Mehsud affirmed his commitment to maximising development efforts in Peshawar, assuring that the city’s aesthetic appeal would be on full display. Anticipated to invigorate tourism and economic vitality, the renovation project will also preserve the historical significance ingrained within Peshawar’s venerable markets.
