TOBA TEK SINGH: Scores of people staged a demonstration against a doctor’s negligence which claimed the life of their relative at a hospital at Rajana.

The protesters said that the Sarwar Foundation hospital’s gynecologist Dr Ayesha Mumtaz conducted abdominal surgery of deceased Rukhsana Kausar two months ago. When the woman’s condition deteriorated, she was referred to a private hospital at Lahore where doctors disclosed that serious infection had been spread in the abdomen as during surgery the doctor forgot to oust a towel while the parts removed in surgery were not sent for biopsy. The protesters demanded action against the doctor and the hospital’s management. They warned if the Healthcare Department failed to take action, they would go to the Lahore high Court and the Supreme Court.

On the other hand, hospital’s director Syed Sajjad Hussain and Medical Superintendent Dr Ali Kamil claimed that the accused lady doctor had been suspended and an inquiry was ordered into the charges leveled against her by the family of the deceased woman. They claimed that Rs 700,000 spent on the woman’s surgeries and treatment at Lahore had been paid by the foundation’s chairperson. However, the protesters claimed that no payment had so far been made to them.
