SRINAGAR: An Indian Air Force (IAF) member was killed and four injured when some armed men ambushed a military convoy in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K), reports foreign media citing an official statement.

The convoy was attacked by an unknown number of armed men who fired at at least one air force truck in the mountainous Poonch area, 200 kilometres south of the main city of Srinagar, the air force said.

Five air force personnel were hit in the firefight late Saturday and “one Air Warrior succumbed to his injuries later”, it said, identifying the dead man as a corporal.

The occupation forces launched a large-scale cordon and search operation across the district on Sunday, and arrested many people.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Indian forces, including army, police and elite para commandos, are taking part in the operation, which entered its second day in the district on Sunday.

Strict restrictions have been imposed in Poonch with increased vehicle checks across the district ahead of polls for Lok Sabha on May 25.
