Having completed our matriculation from Awaran, which lacked almost all basic facilities, some friends and I decided to go to Quetta to complete our intermediate studies. The city has always been portrayed as the best option for those candidates who want to do an FAC or join the medical field and become doctors after matric. Having reached here, we went out to search for a room for us to stay in. We were shocked to learn that we had to pay Rs20000 per month and that some of this had to be given upfront for accommodation. The concentration of education options, especially the better ones, in major cities and their unaffordability for students from rural areas is part of the reason why so many students are unable to continue their studies in Pakistan. The government should at least build cheap hostels or dormitories for students from rural areas coming to major cities for their studies.
