MANSEHRA: The Local Government Chairmen Ittehad expressed optimism on Monday about proposed amendments to the Local Governments Act 2013, foreseeing a strengthening of the grassroots-level system in the province.
“We have been struggling for the release of development funds, our honorariums, and other incentives for the last two years, but to no avail. Now, we are optimistic that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government would incorporate amendments in the existing Act to empower the system and release funds,” said Malik Mumtaz, president of the Ittehad, while speaking to mediamen here.
Flanked by office-bearers of the Ittehad, Mumtaz highlighted the neglect of the LG system by successive governments, asserting that over 27,000 LG representatives across KP awaited legislative reforms. He cautioned that failure to address their demands could prompt a collective pursuit of rights.
“Tendering mass resignations is not the solution to our problems as people in the province would be deprived of civic services and development at the grassroots,” Mumtaz said.
Basharat Ali Swati, the Ittehad’s general secretary, disclosed plans for potential street protests if demands remained unmet.“The government has announced to earmark funds in next year’s budget and empower the system,” he said.Swati asked the government to extend the tenure of the local bodies as that system remained at a standstill since its inception in the province some two years ago.
