Keeping Balochi alive

Saturday, May 18, 2024

I am writing to express my deep concern about the gradual decline of the Balochi language. Balochi holds immense cultural and historical significance, yet it is facing the threat of extinction due to the increasing dominance of Urdu and English. While proficiency in Urdu and English is undoubtedly beneficial, it should not come at the cost of neglecting our mother tongue, Balochi. The education system in Balochistan predominantly focuses on Urdu and English, with limited emphasis on teaching and promoting Balochi language and literature.

This has led to a generation of Baloch youth who are more fluent in Urdu or English than in their own native language. It is essential to recognize the value of preserving and promoting the Balochi language for the preservation of our cultural identity and heritage. The language not only serves as a means of communication but also embodies our collective history, traditions, and values.
