HARIPUR: The five-day cultural festival of Kag ended here on Monday evening at Kaag stadium.
The District Sports Office and the district administration had jointly organized the event to entertain the people at Kaag village, one of the strongholds of the Gujjar tribe of the area. Advisor to CM for Sports and Youth Affairs, Syed Fakhar Jehan, inaugurated the festival on June 6 while MPA from PK 52, Malik Adeel Iqbal was also in attendance on this occasion. According to Divisional Sports Officer Ahmed Zaman, the cultural event known as the Kaag Festival is held every year to promote local cultural spots, encourage new talent and entertain the locals, especially the farming community with traditional sports activities being played for centuries in the area. He said that the purpose of such festivals was to encourage and promote area-specific cultural sports as the provincial government was committed to investing in youths and sports so that they could be engaged in healthy activities. Zaman said during the five-day festival starting from June 6, hundreds of sports lovers from across the district and other parts of KP, thronged the sports venues where the traditional local sports of tent pegging, stone lifting, wrestling and bull race were prominent. Marathon races, gymnastic competitions and Qawali were also part of the festival.
He said that the players from Haripur, surrounding areas and other parts of the province and Punjab took part in the competitions and the players were awarded cash prizes and trophies.
