SUKKUR: Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro on Sunday constituted a five-member committee to be led by Irrigation Secretary Zarif Khero to investigate the collapse of gate No. 47 of the Sukkur Barrage.
According to sources, most of the staff of the Sukkur Barrage was on Eid holidays, which aggravated the situation by causing delay in repair work of the collapsed and damaged gates of the barrage.
The sources said that during the 2010 flood, around 1.2 million cusecs of water passed through the barrage gates but none of its gates was damaged.
The incident of the collapse of the gate of Sukkur Barrage took place due to the negligence of the staff of the irrigation department, the sources added.
The retired secretaries, including Fazlullah Qureshi and others, raised their concerns, saying that the closure of canals due to the repair work will adversely affect the seasonal crops like cotton.
They demanded the installation of the collapsed and damaged gates of the barrage forthwith to avoid inconvenience to the growers.
