I agree with the recent intentions expressed by PM Shehbaz Sharif and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, to cut federal government expenditures. I especially agree that redundant, inefficient and financially wasteful ‘white elephant’ departments should be among the first to be shut down. Among such departments and organizations, one which must certainly be shut down, is the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) which is no longer needed at all. Services and groups like police, district management etc should rightly be devolved to the provincial units, whereas some federal services such as the foreign office, federal tax, revenue and customs, can be allowed to directly recruit and train staff.
White elephants such as Pakistan Railways and Pakistan Post, need to be immediately privatized. There is considerable scope for many more similar departments and organizations to be privatized or shut down in order to have a lean, efficient federal government and administration with minimal expenditures. The sooner the better.
