LAHORE: Former Pakistan football team head coach Shehzad Anwar has expressed his disappointment over the decision of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalisation Committee to withdraw from the SAFF Under-20 Championship.
“I express my deep disappointment and concern over the Pakistan Football Federation Normalisation Committee’s (PFF NC) decision to withdraw from the SAFF U-20 Championship. “This decision is a significant setback for the development of our young footballers and the future of football in Pakistan,” Shehzad said in a written message to this correspondent.
The event will begin in Kathmandu on August 18. Pakistan had initially agreed to field its team in the event but after FIFA did not approve its funding request the PFF NC wrote to SAFF that it is unable to field its team in the event due to funding issues.
“Participation in the U-20 age group tournaments is crucial as it serves as a critical stepping stone for players aspiring to join the national senior team. “By withdrawing from the SAFF U-20 Championship, we have not only missed out on a valuable opportunity for our players to gain international experience but also disrupted the entire cycle of player development.
“This setback could have long-lasting implications on the progress of our young talent,” said Shehzad, a Pro License coach. “I condemn this decision by the PFF NC,” he was quick to add. He said that the authorities should prioritise the growth of youth.
“It’s imperative that our footballing authorities prioritise the growth and development of our youth teams to ensure a strong and competitive future for Pakistani football,” he said. “The future of our national team depends on the nurturing and development of our youth players.”
