The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology has let go of 34 non-teaching contractual and daily wage employees.
The employees include the director of a baby daycare, administrators, office assistants, junior clerks, lab assistants, lab attendants, security guards, peons, drivers, gardeners, computer operators and sweepers.
These employees were hired without any advertisement during the tenure of previous vice chancellors, but they were not made permanent. The contracts of these employees expired in July this year, which were not extended and a letter of termination was issued by the registrar, stating the names, ranks and dates of employment of the employees. The letter said their contractual and daily wage employment has come to an end.
Federal Urdu University Vice Chancellor Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari told The News that the university is suffering from a financial crisis, no additional grant has been received, and there is no money to pay the salaries and pensions of permanent and retired employees.
Dr Shinwari said that in previous periods, there were violations of regulations and dozens of employees were hired on contract and daily wages unnecessarily, which have become a financial burden on the university, so the employees whose contractual and daily wage periods are ending are being dismissed.
