Gen Munir urges religious scholars to encourage tolerance in society

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Syed Asim Munir has urged Ulema and Mashaikh to encourage tolerance and unity in the society and discourage extremism and division.

Speaking at the National Ulema and Mashaikh Convention in the federal capital on Thursday, Gen Munir asked Ulema to bring the society back to moderation and negate anarchy (Fasaad-Fil-Arz), the Radio Pakistan reported.

The Army chief said spreading unrest is the biggest crime and the Pakistan Army under ordains of Allah Almighty is striving to eliminate unrest. “We do not consider such people as Pakistanis who do not accept Shariat and the Constitution,” he added.

He said people have the right to stage protests while remaining peaceful as he warned the nation to stay vigilant of those trying to spread anarchy through social media. The Pakistan Army is working to eradicate anarchy and other forms of corruption in the country, he added. “If anyone tried to spread chaos in Pakistan, by God, we [army] will stand against them.” Gen Munir said criminal and smuggling mafias are providing patronage to terrorism.

Acknowledging the unmatched sacrifices rendered by the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gen Syed Asim Munir said the entire Pakistani nation salutes them for their services and sacrifices. Talking about Afghanistan, he said Pakistan has been hosting millions of Afghans for the last four decades. He said: “We are convincing them to refrain from opposing a brotherly Islamic country like Pakistan for the sake of Khawarij.”

About the respect and finality of the Prophethood, Gen Syed Asim Munir categorically stated that no one can dare disrespect the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him). He said the “western culture and way of life are not our ideals and we should be proud of our own civilization”.

About Kashmir, he said Kashmir is an unfinished agenda of the partition of the Sub-continent. Regarding Palestine, he said, “Our hearts bleed while seeing atrocities in Palestine.” He said it is a lesson from the situation of Palestine that “we will have to protect ourselves and make Pakistan stronger”.
