Crisis governance

Saturday, Aug 10, 2024

This letter refers to the article ‘Adaptive governance’ (August 6, 2024) by Muhammad Awais Umar. The time for a methodical approach to governance in Pakistan is over. There is no escape in sight from the slippery slope we are running down, which is a result of our own mistakes and experiments. A crisis mode of governance might be the only option. Affairs should be run in a more tactical manner to avoid immediate disaster. Then, strategic thinking can take effect and a course of action can be chalked out when the ship has steadied a little.

However, this does not look likely anytime soon. The circumventing of the SC ruling on reserved seats in order to disable the opposition is being looked at as another unfair strike. Until principled politics-based on the people’s will is not exercised, we will never become a stable nation and will constantly be stuck in reactive mode, putting out fires here and there on an ad-hoc basis.
