Islamabad:Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Romina Khurshid Alam on Friday emphasised gender equality and women's empowerment for tackling the world's interconnected crises, including food insecurity, climate change, conflict, fragility, violence, and sluggish economic growth.
During a news conference here about the upcoming two-day meeting of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development on Gender Empowerment and Green Economy, she stressed the importance of parliamentarians in advancing gender empowerment and a green economy.
"These efforts are essential for achieving women's socio-economic empowerment and gender equality, and for meeting sustainable development goals related to education, health, sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience, water and sanitation, clean energy, and decent work."
Outlining the key goals of the upcoming conference, Ms. Romina noted that the event will focus on understanding the gender-specific impacts of climate change and the green economy, exploring the vulnerabilities and strengths of women in these areas, and promoting gender-responsive policies that ensure equal access to resources, land rights, and financial services.
It will also examine successful legislative frameworks in Asian countries that support women’s involvement in green sectors, encourage collaboration among parliamentarians to develop gender-responsive green policies, and facilitate knowledge exchange and peer learning to advance gender equality and sustainable development, according to her.
