Batten down the hatches

Thursday, Sep 05, 2024

As our nation grapples with the fury of torrential rains and scorching heat, the most vulnerable among us are bearing the brunt of this severe weather crisis. The destruction of makeshift homes in rural areas has left many facing unimaginable hardships. Urban residents, too, are suffering greatly, with electrocutions, flooded roads, and road accidents claiming precious lives. The commute to educational institutions has become a perilous journey for students, putting their lives at risk.

A well-planned strategy from the authorities could significantly mitigate the loss of life and property. Citizens have a constitutional right to receive protection in times of crisis. Declaring holidays in non-essential sectors, including educational institutions, would enable people to weather the storm safely. However, essential services like hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and rain-related departments must remain operational to provide vital support.
