This letter refers to the editorial ‘Taxing issues’ (August 31, 2024). It is strange that most people are not aware that tax evasion is a punishable crime. The only way to deal with striking traders and other tax evaders is to treat them as rulebreakers.
Non-filers particularly should be dealt with harshly, they should not be allowed to vote or travel abroad. They should be made to pay 50 per cent extra whenever they buy property, withdraw cash from their bank accounts and pay utility bills. This is the only way to make them see reason.
