ISLAMABAD: A 12-year-old boy has undergone successful combined liver and kidney transplant surgery in Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital (QIH)
The hospital announced on Wednesday the complex procedure was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Shaukat Ali Bangash.
The patient was relieved from the hospital after eight days and is recovering satisfactorily at home. The surgeons have allowed him to walk on his feet.
Talha Mahmood 12, suffering from Hyperoxaluria Type 1, was brought to the QIH by his father Altaf Hussain, who came here from remote area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The team of surgeons advised transplant of his both vital organs simultaneously because two separate surgeries with intervals were not possible in this case and it was done on August 25.
The procedure was complex given the patient’s poor health. Dr. Sikander Aziz Afridi led the surgical team as the liver transplant surgeon, followed by Dr. Nadir Tori, who performed the kidney transplant.
The twelve year young patient, was diagnosed with Hyperoxaluria Type 1, underwent both surgeries on the same day.
