This letter refers to the news report ‘Challenges to country are daunting, says minister’ (September 1, 2024). Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal is absolutely right. The challenges are indeed daunting. Some of them are of our own making, such as political instability and out-of-control population growth. We must usher in a printed charter of progress and prosperity. It must be pursued by one and all relentlessly.
The first step should be a fairly elected government and the establishment joining hands to develop this charter. We had a charter or plan of action with us back in the 1950s and 1960s but we lost it somehow along the way. This current period is extremely important for us. Our efficiency and performance must be enhanced in every sector of life with whatever help we can muster, be it local or foreign.
