This letter refers to the news report ‘Bike-riders without helmet, licence to pay Rs2000 fine’ (September 6, 2024). It is really heartening to note that the authorities have decided to take action against motorcyclists since some statistics show that they are involved in a disproportionate number of traffic accidents. However, apart from helmet and licence checks, other regulations are also needed.
For example the law does not permit several children and adults to be transported on a single bike. Also, motorcyclists are not allowed to weave through traffic but must confine themselves to the extreme left of the road. Further it is mandatory to have a functional front and back light. Hopefully these matters will also be looked into.
