ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Wednesday announced the formation of a committee comprising bar councils and bar associations to discuss the constitutional package. The committee will submit its report within seven days.
The meeting between Tarar and the Supreme Court Bar Association agreed that Constitutional amendments will be shared with the lawyers’ committee before presentation in parliament. The committee will ensure lawyers’ representation in the proposed constitutional court. No individual or organisation, except elected lawyer representatives, will be allowed to call strikes.
The constitutional court’s formation will be done in consultation with lawyers. Tarar emphasised that Parliament has the authority to make laws within constitutional limits. The proposed constitutional court will have representation from all federal units. The court’s establishment aims to define Article 184’s suo motu powers.
Senator Farooq H. Naek from the PPP supported the constitutional court, citing its presence in Western democracies.
