The core committee of the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) in its meeting on Thursday rejected the recently adopted 26th Constitutional Amendment as it was passed by the incumbent Parliament, stating that the National Assembly that accorded approval to the amendment came into existence on the basis of bogus and discredited general elections held in February 2024.
GDA chief Pir Pagara Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi chaired the meeting and expressed concern over the recent move to amend the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) Act and build six canals to draw additional water from the Indus River. He termed it a conspiracy aimed at curtailing Sindh’s water supply.
The participants of the GDA core committee meeting expressed the consensus view that amending the Irsa Act and building new canals to draw additional water from the Indus River would violate the Constitution and weaken the federation of Pakistan. The committee decided to further accelerate the drive to protect the Indus River to fulfil the fundamental water requirements of the people of Sindh.
The GDA core committee expressed concern about the deteriorating law and order situation in Sindh. The meeting decided that the alliance would continue with its contact drive with like-minded political forces for the revival of true democratic dispensation in the country.
The meeting decided that the reorganisation of the GDA at the divisional, district and central level would soon be carried out. GDA Central Secretary General Muhammad Ali Durrani briefed the participants about the current state of national politics in the country.
