Islamabad :: Vice Chancellor of Rawalpindi Medical University Prof Muhammad Umer on Sunday announced that the university has welcomed 44 Palestinian students from conflict-hit Gaza into its fourth year MBBS programme.

“Alhamdolillah, the Almighty Allah is very kind to us [RMU] for allowing serving our Muslim brothers from Gaza during the current challenging times,” Prof Umer told participants of a function at the university campus. He said the arrival of those students was made possible through the collaborative efforts of both federal and provincial governments, along with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, whose president Prof Rizwan Taj played a pivotal role in ensuring that their studies are not interrupted due to the challenging circumstances at home.

The VC said in order to ensure a smooth transition, the university had established a special committee tasked with supervising the integration of Palestinian students. He said the committee would work closely with the dean of Al Azhar University in Gaza to review and adapt the curriculum accordingly.

Prof Umer said special classes would be arranged, and a comprehensive portfolio for each student would be created to document their training activities. According to him, in addition to academic support, RMU will implement a mentoring programme and a “student friendship model” for both academic and social support, while a demographic, academic, and medical database will also be established for the Gaza students. “As the only public sector medical university in Punjab to welcome students from Gaza, we [RMU] take great pride in serving the children of the Muslim Ummah in difficult times,” he said.
