Towards sense

Thursday, Nov 07, 2024

This refers to the letters ‘Dangerous trend’ (October 26, 2024) by Dr Alfred Charles and ‘End mob justice’ (October 26, 2024) by Mashal Tariq Fatima. I agree with the points made by the writers regarding mob violence and anarchy perpetuated by unverified accusations in Pakistan. It is indeed shameful that any individual or group can take the law into their own hands and apparently even co-opt the supposed law enforcers. While it is very important for the federal and provincial governments to strictly monitor such activities and to implement penalties against those who break the laws, it is also important for the authorities to come up with a unified plan on how controversial allegations should be dealt with.

The state must wake up and involve civil society in the process of maintaining rule of law. We must not encourage mob violence or other such negative trends but allow the legal processes to take its course. If we fail to achieve this goal, we will only create more division and instability in the country. I hope that somehow sense will prevail.
