SUKKUR: Thousands of Pakistan People’s Party (Shaheed Bhutto) workers, led by Junior Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the son of Shaheed Mir Murtaza Bhutto and grandson of Z.A. Bhutto, took to the streets of Shahdadkot on Saturday. The protest rally, which began at Sabzi Mandi, saw participants carrying banners, placards, and pictures of Junior Bhutto, as they marched against the construction of six new canals from the Indus River.
The party workers participating in the rally will not accept the canal from the Indus River. During the sit-in, the traffic coming towards Sindh and Balochistan was suspended. Junior Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, addressing the sit-in, said that the Indus River is our mother, while the canals coming out of the Indus River will not be recognised in any way. Before the existence of Pakistan, Sindh had the status of a state, he said, adding: “Punjab, KPK, Balochistan, including Sindh, will suffer if the canals are constructed on the Indus River. Taking canals from the Indus River is an illegal act and the Indus Delta will become a lamentation for the destruction of agriculture. It is a matter of shame that the People’s Party has always been intoxicated with power and has bargained for Sindh’s resources and water.”
He said that millions of people in Sindh have already rejected the Kalabagh project. “We will not allow the construction of 6 new illegal canals and launch a resistance struggle from Shahdadkot, the constituency of grandfather Shaheed ZA Bhutto.”
