LHC questions why schools closed but construction activities continue

LAHORE:Justice Shahid Karim of Lahore High Court (LHC) remarked order was issued that no construction work would be done in these two months and why the order is not being implemented. He remarked educational institutions are closed why constructions are not being closed.

He gave these remarks during hearing of the case related to smog here Monday. Senior legal adviser Wasa Mian Irfan advocate and law officers of different departments appeared in the court. The Punjab government filed report in the court about the steps taken by it.

Counsel for the Punjab govt told the court operation was conducted on three bus stands and action was taken against 60 smoky vehicles. Justice Shahid Karim remarked the remains of crops are still being burnt. Did government not know its remains will be burnt after paddy crop. But government did nothing.

He remarked due to tree cutting Multan stands at No 1 in smog. The govt was asked to take steps with regard to work from home. But nothing was done. Courts gave no order for closing markets from 8pm. Justice Shahid Karim remarked government should assign the duty to all DCs and ACs all over Punjab asking them to come out of their offices and conduct checking on roads. Situation will not change due to fine of Rs1,500 to Rs2,000. The govt should think seriously about suspending construction. The court while seeking report from different departments adjourned hearing of the case till today (Tuesday).
