LAHORE: The 41st edition of the Governors Cup Golf Tournament 2024 begins on Friday (today) at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course.
At a press conference held ahead of the tournament, Shaukat Javed, Convener of Golf, shared details alongside key stakeholders, including Sikander Mustafa Khan, Chairman of Millat Tractors, Ahsan Imran, CEO of Millat Equipment, Raza Saeed, Captain of Gymkhana Golf, and Bela Azam, Lady Captain. The event is coordinated by Imran Ayub and overseen by Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed, Director Media of the Tournament.
This championship, now in its 41st edition, represents a longstanding partnership between Millat Tractors and Lahore Gymkhana. Shaukat Javed highlighted that this collaboration has not only strengthened over the years but also positioned the tournament as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s golf calendar.
A unique aspect of the championship is its emphasis on amateur players, with the main trophy awarded based on net scores, allowing middle-handicap players a chance to shine. Many past winners of this tournament have gone on to achieve national recognition and elevate their playing status.
Amateur players with a handicap of 12 or below will be showing their skills for stroke play over three days and 54 holes. Awards will be given to the top three players in both gross and net categories. The coveted Governors Cup will be awarded to the participant with the best net score.
The tournament is being held at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course. The 18-hole championship course, par 72, spans 85 acres. Some of the prominent competitors this year in Men’s Category are Jamal Nasir, Ahmed Ibrahim, Shamir Majid, Noman Ilyas (Pakistan’s No. 1 amateur), Brig Omer Ijaz, Ilyas Ahmed, Shahid Abbas, and defending champion M. Shoaib. Women’s category has Bushra Fatima, Suneya Osama, Ghazala Yasmin, and Zahida Durrani. The final round of the tournament will take place on Sunday.
