ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentary Leader in the Senate Sherry Rehman On Tuesday expressed her deep concern during the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee meeting regarding the worsening situation in the Middle East, particularly highlighting Israel’s exploitation of the political vacuum in Syria to advance its agenda in the occupied Golan Heights and other areas.
Senator Sherry emphasised the increasing intensity of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which she warned could destabilise the entire region.
She called for the safe return of Pakistani citizens and urged the international community to take immediate action.
She strongly condemned Israel’s recent legislation aimed at undermining the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides essential humanitarian aid in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan and Syria, particularly in the fields of health and education.
Sherry pointed out that the legislation would also affect the right of Palestinian refugees to return, as guaranteed by international law.
She further highlighted the devastating impact of Israeli military actions, stating that, due to Israeli brutality, 44,612 Palestinians have been martyred and 105,834 injured, including many women and children.
She condemned the killing of over 180 journalists during Israeli bombings in Gaza and the widespread destruction of vital infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and residential areas. The senator called for severe accountability of Israel for its actions and demanded that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs take a strong and vocal stance against Israel’s war crimes.
