Syria, located in the heart of the Middle East, is a country of historical and geopolitical significance. Bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel and Lebanon to the southwest, its strategic position has made it a focal point in regional and international politics. The fall of the Assad regime in Syria has the potential to significantly impact the region and beyond, causing a chain of complex developments. It will weaken Iran’s influence in Syria, and it is also a setback for Russia, which invested military and political resources in supporting the Assad regime. It could also lead to renewed civil war or the emergence of competing factions. Some other group may seek to take power, raising concerns about extremist governance and the instability of a fractured Syria.
The global consequences extend beyond the region. Assad’s fall could signal shifting dynamics in authoritarian regimes and may encourage opposition movements in surrounding countries. Neighbouring countries, already hosting millions of refugees, could face increased migration pressure. International cooperation is required to avoid chaos and ensure the representation of Syria's diverse communities in governance.
