LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested three individuals accused of editing and sharing fabricated images of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, FIA sources revealed on Friday.

According to the sources, 20 social media accounts involved in disseminating the fake images have been identified. Raids are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects, with authorities intensifying efforts to curb the spread of misinformation.

A joint investigation team, led by Additional Director Sarfaraz Chaudhry and comprising deputy directors from Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad, has been formed to oversee the inquiry.

The investigation was initiated following a formal request from the Punjab government after doctored images featuring Maryam Nawaz went viral on social media. The FIA’s Cybercrime Wing is pursuing leads across the country, including in Lahore, to trace and prosecute those responsible.

The FIA has warned that individuals involved in creating and spreading false content will face strict legal action, emphasising the agency’s commitment to addressing cybercrime and upholding the integrity of public figures.
