The Sindh government will launch an environmentally friendly electric vehicle (EV) taxi service and establish a regulatory authority to oversee its operations, announced Sindh’s Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon.
The provincial government is also working to develop a robust EV charging network across major urban and rural areas of the province. Chairing a high-level meeting in Karachi on Tuesday, Memon discussed plans to introduce EV taxis in the province. The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zaman, Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kamal Dayo, People’s Bus Service Project Director Sohaib Shafiq, and other senior officials.
Minister Memon highlighted the government’s commitment to modernising the transport sector and attracting investment by introducing eco-friendly solutions. He announced the establishment of a regulatory body to monitor and manage the operations of the EV taxi service.
The minister revealed plans to implement a central command and control system for efficient management and monitoring of the taxi fleet. The EV taxis will feature intelligent transport systems, advanced payment options, and cutting-edge security features.
Memon also stressed the importance of building a comprehensive EV charging network to ensure the smooth operation and expansion of the service. He described the initiative as a transformative step toward creating a modern, sustainable, and environmentally friendly transport infrastructure in Sindh.
“Our goal is to position Sindh as a pioneer in green transport solutions across Pakistan,” stated the minister. He emphasised that the project will not only protect the environment but also create opportunities for local businesses, attract international investors, and drive economic growth.
The minister directed officials to expedite preparations for the EV taxi service by ensuring the development of necessary infrastructure, legal frameworks, and investor facilitation measures. He said the initiative would set a benchmark for eco-friendly transport solutions in Pakistan while supporting Sindh’s journey toward sustainable development and economic progress.
