PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Secretariat has issued a notification declaring the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Universities (Amendment) Bill 2024 as law.
As a result, the powers previously held by the governor have now been transferred to Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. He will serve as the chancellor of the KP universities.
Earlier, the KP Assembly had passed the amendment bill and sent it to Governor Faisal Karim Kundi for approval. However, the governor raised objections and returned the bill. Despite this, the Assembly Secretariat, however, notified the bill as law.
Before this amendment, the governor was the chancellor of all universities in the province. But these powers have been transferred to the chief minister following the enactment of this law.
Under the new law, the chief minister has the authority to appoint vice-chancellors from a list of three candidates recommended by the Academic Search Committee.
The law specifies that the tenure for vice-chancellors will be four years. However, if their performance is deemed unsatisfactory, the term can be terminated at any time.
