LAHORE: A family was robbed at gunpoint Sunday night and deprived of over Rs700,000 in cash and other valuables near the University of Management and Technology (UMT) in the limits of Township police.
The victims - a younger brother and the sister of Aamir Ghauri, the resident Editor of The News, Islamabad - filed a complaint with the Township police stating that he was returning home in the Revenue Employees Cooperative Housing Society along with his sister when the incident occurred. Bilal Shafi Ghauri told police they were intercepted by two armed robbers in a car that was parked on UMT Road, around the Township area. The criminals held both victims hostage and forced them to hand over their valuables.
Mr Ghauri, a reputed textile industry professional, reported that the robbers snatched his wallet, which contained a sum of Rs2 lakh in cash along with his identification documents and ATM cards. Additionally, the robbers took 1,200 pounds sterling from his sister’s possession. She was in Pakistan to attend a family function.
The matter was promptly reported to police and members of the Punjab Chief Minister’s team. The Township police have registered a case based on Mr Ghauri’s complaint and have begun an investigation into the matter. Police are working to track down the culprits, although no arrests have been made so far.
