This letter refers to the news report ‘Man commits suicide after 11-year–old daughter declared Vani’ (March 10, 2025). What happened to this poor man’s daughter came on top of Rs700,000 being extorted from him. If the past is any guide, some strong statements will be made about this incident, unaccompanied by matching action, to pacify the public sentiment a bit. With the passage of time, when the tragedy fades a bit from public memory, the whole thing will be forgotten until the next time there is a similar tragedy. Then, the same pattern will be repeated. Is there no possibility for concrete action in such cases?
