LAHORE:The Department of Media and Development Communication, University of the Punjab in collaboration with the Punjab Women Protection Authority (PWPA) commemorated International Women’s Day event titled ‘Accelerate action: Advancing and celebrating gender equity.’
Students, faculty, staff, and community members, gathered to celebrate the achievements of women and discuss critical issues related to gender equality. The chief guest was MPA and Punjab Women Protection Authority Chairperson Hina Parvez Butt. Other panellists included PWPA DG Kulsoom Saqib, Fatima Razzaq, Ayesha Ayub, and others while it was hosted by Dr Ayesha Ashfaq, the Chairperson Department of Media and Development Communication.
Hina Parvez Butt presented key facts to the audience regarding Pakistan’s standing in the global gender equality index. She pointed out that, on average, women in Pakistan earn 18% less than men for similar work. She emphasised that any form of violence against women is a red line for the chief minister. She discussed the alarming number of cases that are reported daily to their authority, including domestic violence, murder, acid attacks, and rape. She encouraged women to establish clear boundaries and to be vigilant about recognising and addressing any red flags in their relationships.
Dr Ayesha Ashfaq highlighted the lack of women’s participation in the digital economy. She emphasised that the economic participation of women is crucial for transforming Pakistan into a digital economy. She highlighted the importance of reinforcing the rights of marginalised segments of society.
