A rich tribute was paid to the late Prof Khurshid Ahmed, economist and former deputy head of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan, as his funeral prayers in absentia were offered at the Karachi JI headquarters, Idara Noor-e-Haq, on Monday.
A large number of the people of Karachi, including political and social activists, offered the prayers in absentia that were led by JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman. Talking to the media and the participants, the JI chief shed light on the life of Prof Khurshid. He said the late scholar was an asset not only for the JI and Pakistan but also for the global Islamic movements.
Several countries in the region and beyond improved themselves with the services and recommendations of Prof Khurshid, Rehman maintained and lamented that Prof Khurshid’s own homeland unfortunately could not act upon his recommendations, despite the fact that he had served the country in the capacity of a senator multiple times.
Prof Khurshid was 93 when he died in the United Kingdom on April 13. Rehman said the late economist was deeply concerned over the affairs in Pakistan and he spent his entire life for the cause of Islam’s supremacy in the country.
The JI emir recalled that during a meeting in the United Kingdom, Prof Khurshid told him to struggle for the survival of Urdu language. Rehman added that the late scholar was known for his logical discussions and articulating comprehensive arguments. With his demise, the JI had suffered a big loss, he remarked. Karachi JI Emir Monem Zafar also paid a rich tribute to Prof Khurshid. The late JI leader served as a senator multiple times. He was also the founder of the Islamic Foundation Leicester.
