ISLAMABAD: Traffic accidents in Pakistan dropped by over 33 percent in 2024 if compared with 2023, official statistics reveals.
However, Balochistan is the only region in Pakistan where traffic accidents in 2024 were more than those occurred in 2023. A total of 6,233 traffic accidents took place countrywide in 2024 among which 4,231 were fatal traffic accidents. In 2023, a total number of 9,333 road accidents took place across the country among which 3,820 were fatal traffic accidents.
Punjab witnessed the most fatal and non-fatal traffic accidents among all the provinces. A total of 2,298 fatal accidents and 2,465 non-fatal road accidents took place in only Punjab in 2024. Whereas in 2023, Punjab witnessed a total of 4,096 traffic accidents among which 2,011 were fatal and 2,085 were non-fatal accidents.
Sindh reported 558 fatal accidents and 344 non-fatal accidents. The total number of accidents that took place were 902 in the province in 2024. However in the previous year 2023, a total number of 733 road accidents took place in Sindh with 454 fatal accidents and 279 non-fatal accidents.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported a total of 3,323 road accidents in 2024 among which 880 were fatal traffic accidents and 2,443 were non-fatal accidents. In 2023, the region reported a total of 3,278 road accidents with 860 fatal accidents and 2,418 non-fatal accidents.
In Balochistan, a total of 344 road accidents were reported in 2024 among which 175 were fatal and 169 were non-fatal traffic accidents. Whereas in 2023, a total of 396 accidents were reported in Sindh- 226 were fatal accidents while 170 were non-fatal. This is the only province where traffic accidents increased in 2024 if compared with 2023.
In Gilgit Baltistan, a total of 286 traffic accidents in 2024 where 81 were fatal accidents and 205 were non-fatal accidents. In 2023, a total 121 road accidents were recorded in the region with 36 fatal and 85 non-fatal accidents.
In Azad Jammu Kashmir, 409 road accidents were reported among which 111 were fatal accidents and 298 were non-fatal accidents. In 2023, AJK reported a total of 391 road accidents where 115 were fatal and 276 were non-fatal accidents.
Whereas in the federal capital Islamabad, a total of 128 fatal traffic accidents and 199 non-fatal traffic accidents were reported in 2024. In 2023, Islamabad had reported 227 road accidents with 117 fatal and 110 non-fatal accidents.
