DUBAI: The UAE is set to replace traditional ID cards with advanced facial recognition technology, allowing residents to access government services and pass through airports by simply showing their faces.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports already use some of the world’s best facial recognition systems, eliminating physical contact and enhancing convenience for travelers.Abdulrahman Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention and Minister of State for FNC Affairs, announced that biometric identification, including facial recognition and fingerprints, is part of the UAE’s digital-first strategy.

“The system, supported by artificial intelligence, could be implemented nationwide within a year,” he said while addressing the UAE’s consultative parliamentary body Federal National Council.

The Emirates ID card, which is mandatory for UAE residents and citizens, already incorporates advanced features like laser-printed 3D photos and a service life of over ten years. However, facial recognition technology aims to enhance this by making identity verification faster and more secure across various services, including voting and smart gate airport entry.Abu Dhabi and Dubai airports use advanced biometric systems, eliminating the need for physical documents.
