ISLAMABAD: Despite a shaky start to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season X, Multan Sultans’ skipper Mohammad Rizwan remained resolute in his belief that his side can still mount a powerful comeback -- with improved fielding at the heart of his strategy.
Addressing the media ahead of a pivotal home stand in Multan, Rizwan struck a tone of cautious optimism, asserting that the season is still in its early stages and Sultans are just a few fine-tuned efforts away from turning things around.
“It’s just the beginning,” Rizwan remarked. “We’ve been let down by our fielding in the opening matches -- that’s the area we need to sharpen up. If we can fix that, we’ll be in a much stronger position to push for a spot in the knockout stage. Playing in front of our home crowd is the perfect setting to reignite our campaign.”
Sultans face two back-to-back showdowns at the Multan Cricket Stadium this Tuesday and Wednesday -- first against in-form Lahore Qalandars, followed by a high-voltage clash with PSL X frontrunners Islamabad United. These contests are nothing short of make-or-break for last year’s runners-up, who have stumbled in all three of their outings so far -- suffering defeats to Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, and Peshawar Zalmi.
Acknowledging the gravity of the challenge ahead, Rizwan said: “These are tough matches, no doubt. But we’re preparing to win both. If we manage that, not only will we be back in the hunt -- I believe we can even challenge for the top spot. The PSL is a long tournament; early setbacks don’t define the final outcome. What matters is how you respond.”
The captain emphasized that while the team has shown glimpses of brilliance, particularly in certain departments, consistency and sharper fielding are key to reversing their fortunes. “We’ve performed well in patches, even in losing efforts. But cricket is a team game, and we must execute as a unit. Fielding has been our weakest link so far -- correcting that will help us apply pressure and control the flow of matches.”
When asked about his personal performance, Rizwan was characteristically humble and forward-looking. “I don’t dwell on past performances -- my focus is entirely on what lies ahead. These next two games are crucial, and we must make the most of them. I have full faith in the team’s ability to bounce back with strength and purpose.”
With their today’s clash against Lahore Qalandars looming large, Sultans know that only a win will suffice. Another defeat could push them to the brink of elimination -- a scenario Rizwan and his team are determined to avoid. As the spotlight intensifies and pressure mounts, all eyes will be on the Sultans to see if they can rise from the ashes and recapture the momentum that took them to the final last season.
