Balanced regulation

Friday, Apr 25, 2025

This refers to the letter ‘Unregulated nicotine’ (March 20, 2025) by Muhammad Abdullah. It is important to consider a broader perspective regarding the regulation of nicotine pouches in Pakistan. The country continues to face a significant smoking challenge, with approximately 25 million tobacco users, among the highest rates globally. This widespread prevalence not only impacts public health but also places a growing burden on the healthcare system and economy. It is essential to recognise that, for many adult smokers, nicotine pouches represent a significantly less harmful alternative to combustible cigarettes.

By enabling smokers to shift towards these alternatives, we can effectively reduce smoking-related illnesses and ease the long-term economic pressures stemming from tobacco use. We should promote access to scientifically supported alternatives like nicotine pouches, backed by strict quality controls, transparent labelling and comprehensive public education initiatives. This balanced strategy will not only serve the immediate public health needs but also address the growing economic and social demand for better nicotine delivery options.
