India and Pakistan have narrowly avoided a nuclear catastrophe. Sadly, many innocent people still lost their lives due to India’s desire to exercise hegemony over South Asia. But Pakistan refused to give in and proved its supremacy over India’s forces, resulting in the latter’s acceptance of a US-brokered ceasefire. The region has been saved from destruction for the time being.
There is still a significant trust deficit between both countries and the ceasefire can collapse at any time. There is a need for a permanent resolution to the Kashmir issue that respects its people’s right to self-determination in order to ensure peace. This path is also in line with the relevant UN resolutions.
