The Sindh government has decided to hold a ceremony next month to distribute electric scooters to women. In the first phase of the project, 1,000 women will receive scooters, and all necessary arrangements have been finalised.
A high-level meeting was held in Karachi to review progress on major transport initiatives, including electric vehicle (EV) taxis and scooters on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Sindh Senior Minister and Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon.
Memon said EV taxis and scooters are not only employment opportunities for the youth but also vital for enhancing women’s mobility and improving the environment. He added that the government is working to launch the EV taxi service alongside the scooter distribution by June 2025.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) Managing Director Kamal Dayo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Trans Karachi Fawad Ghaffar Soomro, Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Director Zameer Abbasi, and other officials.
The project director of the Yellow Line BRT informed the meeting that a major component of the project, the Jam Sadiq Bridge, is expected to be completed by June 2025, three months ahead of the original deadline of September 2025. He also reported that work on Depot 1 and Depot 2 is progressing rapidly, with both expected to be completed ahead of schedule.
During the briefing on the Red Line BRT project, the CEO of Trans Karachi said significant progress is being made on the construction of depots, stations, and the biogas plant. Sharjeel Memon directed all relevant institutions to complete the projects on time and maintain high standards, ensuring that citizens benefit from modern, safe, and reliable public transportation. He welcomed the early completion of the Jam Sadiq Bridge but urged that similar momentum be maintained across all ongoing projects.
